As we know Buddhism has multiple branches rooted in different regions of the world, Zen Buddhism is one of them. One cannot simply define Zen Buddhism without knowing it as it is similar to describing the taste of honey without having it. This branch of Buddhism is developed from the Mahayana form of Buddhism. It is practiced in Japan and is known as Zen Buddhism.
What is Zen?
Zen is a school of Mahayana Buddhism which lies at the heart of Japanese culture. It is the practice of mastering the discipline and enlightening spiritually. Going back to the time of Siddhartha Gautama, also known as Shakyamuni Gotama in Japan, we get to know that he was the first Buddha to attain enlightenment and establish Buddhism.
What is Zazen?
Zazen is the practice of Zen Buddhism. The Zen meditation techniques are known as Zazen, where “Za” means sitting and “Zen” means meditation in the Japanese language. The core of Zen Buddhism is Zazen and is considered as the way of discovering yourself and gaining inner peace.
In Japanese culture, it is said that for self-discovery and vigilance, one needs to meditate while sitting on a meditation cushion. This school of Buddhism teaches the basic practice of life which is living from moment to moment. Zazen is the only path to reach enlightenment.
Zen And The Principles Of Buddhism
Zen Buddhism is another approach to Buddhism in view of Japanese culture. It is considered as the strictest form of Buddhist practice as it roots from the Mahayana form of Buddhism. In Zen, Zazen is considered as the height of spiritual enlightenment. It is a source of all our actions in daily life. It controls our emotions, actions, and attitude towards others if we practice it with strictness and discipline.
For an average person, it is tough to grasp the concept of Zen. To understand the ideas, thoughts, beliefs, of Zen Buddhism, you need to follow the principles of Buddhism. The Eight Fold Path and the Four Noble Truths are the two basic approaches to Buddhism.
The practice of Zazen has a positive effect on our regular daily functions. Zen Buddhism is not a religion or dogma, it is the idea or knowledge which helps a person attains enlightenment. In Japan, there is the Dojo or the hall to practice Zazen. It is where the Buddhists meditate.
