The Story Of Angulimal And Buddha Shakyamuni
After attaining enlightenment, the Buddha Shakyamuni traveled far and wide to spread his teachings and to teach people the right way to live. He met kings, slaves, and normal people whom he instantly impressed with his knowledge, and eventually, they became his disciples. One of the most celebrated records of an encounter that happened with the Buddha was of an infamous criminal named Angulimal. He was infamous of murdering travelers and tying their fingers in garland that he wore around his neck.
Buddha was passing by a small forest, and he thought that he was being followed but didn’t pay any attention to it. After some time, Angulimal appeared in front of him and raised his weapon. Being a fearless man of God that he was, Buddha didn’t react a bit and stood there with no fear or expression on his face. Angulimal was surprised to see a man who didn’t fear death and was completely calm even when death is just in front of him. In a fit of anger, Angulimal uprooted a small tree to show his strength and to strike fear in Buddha’s heart, but Buddha smiled at him.
Now, Angulimal was angry, and he asked Buddha that why he isn’t scared. Buddha replied that he only feared the divine power and no one else as he is the most powerful being. Angulimal uprooted a tree and said, isn’t that powerful? Real power isn’t in killing someone, and it lies with the one who can give life and help the weak. Angulimal now realized his mistake and fell to his knees. So, he became one of the most favorite disciples of Buddha Shakyamuni.
